Elsje, an only child, was born on June 12, 1923 in Benkoelen, Sumatra, Indonesia to Atse and Eleonore Spaans. She was raised in Indonesia where she met and married Max Antoine van den Vrijhoef. They were married for 64 years before he passed on August 14, 2010.

Elsje lived a blessed life. During their marriage, she and Max raised their five children while traveling through The Netherlands, Indonesia and Australia. The family immigrated to America in 1963 and settled in South Pasadena. In 1992, Elsje and Max made their final moved to Vista, CA.

Elsje loved all critters, especially her dogs! She loved being in her garden and watching her flowers bloom. She was an amazing cook and truly enjoyed cooking for her family and friends. Elsje enjoyed sewing, knitting and crocheting and would spend hours reading and working on puzzles. She just loved to keep busy. Elsje also loved to travel and she made several trips to Holland, Australia and Hawaii as well as road trips through several states.
